Black Eyed Susans

Black Eyed Susans

Fall is that time of year when my summer garden starts to fade and gets a bit overgrown, except for the black eyed susans with the formal name Rudbeckia. I think they should be called black eyed Beckys.

I pulled out the annuals that looked tired and overspent to make room for more perennial growth and spreading. That'll give the "susans" a chance to scatter their beauty to other parts of the garden. These flowers are not only beautiful but functional as well. As they go to seed, they'll be a tasty treat for the birds.

When I arrived home the other evening I was fascinated with the garden lights weaving their magic among the bright yellow flowers. I grabbed my handy I-phone and captured the moment. Happy gardening and hugs to all.

Check out alphabet Thursday at Jenny's.

Lovely photograph. I always think of them as baby sunflowers.

I like Black Eyed Susans, Pam. There are several names for these but Black Eyed Susans seems to stick. We have a lot of them here in SouthEast Texas also.
Good "S" word.

I can't think if we have any Black Eyed Susans here in the UK, although I do remember an aunt having a plant with that name. Doesn't look familiar, though. How great (well I would say this, wouldn't I) that birds can eat the seeds ... I have to buy them for our birds!

Autumn is a great month and just think how much nearer spring will be!

Gorgeous! They are very similar to my favorite flower too, the sunflower. Farmer David has our winter garden going so we are waiting for our first crop of chard, kale, 3 different varieties of onions, leeks and collard greens. He snuck in a celery too, just for fun. Happy gardening Pam!

I have always been fond of black-eyed Susans, and not just because we share a name.
